The Outdoor Capital - Fort William and Lochaber, provides an excellent
base for a short break or a longer stay. The area is centrally
located in the west Highlands which makes travelling north, south,
east or west very interesting and diverse. Just look at the map
opposite.
Half day or full day sight seeing trips in the car are extremely
popular with visitors and there are so many options to consider.
Within Lochaber there are lots of routes which can be a real fun
journey of discovery - travelling out in one direction and returning
from another.
Just outside the boundaries of Lochaber is north Argyll to the
south and west, with Skye and Lochalsh and Inverness-shire
to the north. The Aviemore and Speyside area lies to the north
east.
Some very popular routes include those below all of which are
easily "do able" in a day.
A day trip to Skye
One of our favourite routes, this route allows visitors to travel
either clockwise or anti-clockwise. Our preference is to travel
anti-clockwise which takes in:
The Great Glen, Glen Morison, The mountains of Kintail, Eilean
Donan Castle, Kyle of Lochalsh, over the bridge to Skye, explore
parts of Skye before returning in the early evening from
Armadale to Mallaig, and back into Lochaber on the Road to the
Isles. Allow 10-12 hours in the summer for this trip.
Loch Ness
The Great Glen,
Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Inverness, Culloden, Speyside,
Loch Laggan, Spean Bridge. A good day out and not so far to drive.
Around Ardnamurchan
Corran Ferry, Ardgour, Strontian, Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Loch Ailort,
The ROad to the Isles, Corpach, Fort William
Glencoe and Argyll
Glencoe, Castle Stalker, Oban, Ben Cruachan, Glen Orchy, Rannoch
Moor, Glencoe
We are looking at ways to bring you more comprehensive routes
to help make the most of your visit.
